Curupira from the Amazon

In order to bring some of my country's culture to more people, I started this project that consists of portraying characters from regional folklore. The idea is to cover one of these characters in each illustration and bring a little of their history and interesting facts about them.

The first character in this series is Curupira, a figure from Amazonian folklore. A creature described as having a “Boy’s Body”. In fact, this is one of the versions of the translation of his name in the local indigenous language. One of its features that most catches my attention is its fiery hair, which I tried to represent in this illustration as detailed as possible.

Another unique feature that may seem strange and uncomfortable at first glance is its feet facing backwards, which it uses to its advantage to prevent pursuers from following in its footsteps.

The Curupira is also described as a protector of the forests, very cruel and vengeful towards anyone who harms it. Furthermore, he is a very curious and observant figure.

The scene depicted in the illustration represents one of the ways used to escape it. As a curious creature, it can be easily distracted. One of the tricks to get her attention is to leave her a ball of vine making it easier for her prey to escape.

I deeply believe that spreading knowledge about other cultures can lead to a better world that celebrates diversity and what is different and unique. This project comes as part of this purpose of cultural expansion.
